Subject: Back in the 60's

North End I-15
I worked on a Ranch north of Havre near the Canadian border. We had to quit college as wife was PG and NO money for baby or expenses. The place where we lived had the well in the porch of the house . House was built after well was drilled , don't remember the depth as never had to pull it. After the baby we had lots of diapers to wash . First thing into the washing machine was a sacrificial diaper . After it had soaked up the iron then the regular laundry was done. Lots of "Calgon" added to water. Castle was the hand soap. Water had a lousy smell but cattle drank it just fine. Well @ the home ranch further north was much better,
The Rocky Boy Indians want water and so with in 20 years we may get hooked to a rural water system as a result. Farms across southern Alberta have water and NG to each farm . Don't know the cost but it is cheap com paired to hauling water and heating with propane.
Only good water here is @ 2000' according to the oil wells drilled in the area . When we built here in the 50's we spudded 7 wells down to 150 ' with little or no success. (Old rig owned by neighbor, no permits needed back then)The volume was all too little or quality bad for household use. This farm has hauled water since 1910 for household use . A few years back I was able to lay 8000' of pipe on the surface to get spring water to the house. Only flows during the March/ November time frame. (Spring flows year around.) A RO unit does the drinking water(3 Gallons a day) and the Culligan takes the iron out. TDS=1375 28 Grains hard ,1ppm Iron. Cost is $50 per month for rental of RO and softener.
Neighbor 1.5 miles away has volumes of water . had 7 wells @ one time. A well for every area of use. One in middle of barn , one for garden, one for house, one for the Cat ( ran water ,no anti freeze in those days) a well for the old house and a well for the watering of the yard, Most were dug wells , a couple were spudded . (His rig )
Mother always envied the trees and green grass there .
