outside looking for more corn cobs
If it were not for the bean counters and investors wanting as large a profit as possible, and the customer not being willing to sacrifice their first born (and maybe second born) child, you could have a perfect machine that never needs to be repaired.
Many of the items that people gripe about wearing out are downsized, 'economized', or redesigned such that they will function for a while, then need to be replaced.
Most engineers would love to build a machine that never needs to be repaired as part of the normal maintenance. You'd have 1/2" thick steel for the flighting on all augers and auger troughs, all body panels, and elevator housings. All electrical wiring would have 1/4" thick insulation, the lights would be shock and vibration isolated.
The hitch would be capable of lifting anything you can hook to it.
The coolers would handle any load.
The transmission would have 3/4" thick clutches, and the gears would be 4" wide.

In other words, the equipment would be the equivalant of a modern 'Marvelous One Hoss Shay': http://rpo.library.utoronto.ca/poem/1028.html

But, since money is a major deciding factor, machines will need repairs.
