Subject: HZ split packer drills

NW Washington
The old JD split-packer wheel drills used in the wheat fallow country in Washington state were model HZ's and they were commonly on 14" rows. The split packers let them seed real deep in dry dusty summer fallow and get the seed down into moisture. The deep furrows also protected the wheat from blowing sand. This is in hot dry, 10" rainfall areas, that should be in permanent grass. There are a few updated air seeder version of the split packer drill being made by a local outfit, or I should say were being made. The link has a picture of one of them.
