SW Saskatchewan | Back a few years ago, 14'-16"-18" was a common spacing for winter wheat in Montana-a lot of those old deep furrow drills made it into southern Canada and were not as successful for spring wheat. But boy did they ever leave a furrow - if there was any snow at all it would cover the plant-also the furrow protected the little plant from wind damage.
Supposedly the wide spacings were also used in Washington-JD built a drill with a split packer and the shank between the two packer halves to clear trash off the shank-something about disease spread being controlled by the wider spacing.
The idea of a fert row between the seed rows sounds interesting-maybe a person could lay on the N in the fall without having to worry about too soft a plant for winter hardiness- if it was out of the root zone of the fall plant.
