I think the service manual shows the correct procedure to check the play. Like said, it should have had them replaced at least once at 10,000 hrs. We replaced them in our 8760 at less than 3000, and most of the hours on that tractor was pulling a planter if that matters.

I'm relatively mechanically retarded, and we did ours ourselves in a day if I remember right. A neighbor decided to wat a year, and its was EXTREMELY expensive to fix after it broke in half the next fall.
