  I think you are on the right track with a small drain plug as near the bottom as practical.  Feeding the fitting in is no big deal. Drill the hole use a stiff piece of wire to reach the drilled hole and slip the fitting on the wire. It slides right down so you can grab it. Tighten it and put a plug in it.   I wouldn't put it on the bottom for obvious reasons. First guy to move it will break it.  Using a pump or whatever is just another complication you don't need. Once you have the plug installed you can drain it and throw some pool pellets or copper sulfate in the small amount of water that is left.  Should be good to go.
