LibreOffice plays very well with Excel in my experience. I have downloaded university spreadsheets and most work in LO. If there are macros, it is a little more tricky. I have adapted some macros to work. Charts are another area where some rework may be needed sometimes. I would try it. Gnumeric is another spreadsheet program that will read excel spreadsheets.
