| I lifted these numbers from Jim1_Ks below.. which looks accurate..
these figures for Kansas:cotton Planted Acres: 2013 27,000 acres 41,000 bales 2014 31,000 acres 48,000 bales 2015 16,000 acres 35,000 bales 2016 32,000 acres 71,000 bales 2017 93,000 acres 197,000 bales 2018 165,000 acres 335,000 bales (projected)
It's not a big deal nationally.. but locally.. There's a lot of talk about expansion. One outfit bought a third picker.. there's talk of another gin coming in..?? And more guys are dabbling in the crop as they can afford to.
In short.. Cotton is a revival crop.. as the World's economy has recovered from the Great Recession.. Huge stocks have been whittled down.. (I didn't catch what China did to their supposedly huge stocks.. still there? does it matter?) So demand is growing.. slowly..
And the traditional places that grow cotton.. Tx Panhandle.. which is running out of water to grow corn.. Lot's of places at like $0.40 over.. Plainview Tx was bidding $4.15 as of Friday.. Are looking at Cotton as it only takes maybe a third of the amount of water to grow.
but it does take $$$...
In Kansas we are looking for a diversity from Wheat.. and to a lesser extent water pressures.. to reduce pumping.. and yet maintain profitability. So as infrastructure grows.. so will cotton acreage.
fwiw.
