Yeah it's never good to wean calves and remove them from the area.

A large cattle operation by me sets up a big temporary corral in the middle of a field and weans a few hundred calves. They water and feed them there and the cows are all around them. A few days later they load up the calves and take them to there feedlot. They told me once that they weaned a couple hundred calves and took them home right away. That night they had cows running everywhere for miles.
