Consolation prize for second place, the current renter probably isn't too happy with you either.
Dick move by the landlord, but it's done all the time. They just took advantage of your eagerness. Next time might be a good idea to talk to the current renter, a lot of times tenants and landlords aren't getting along and they know their time is up.
