I've got a 07 century with a Mercedes and really like it. I had the same question before I bought it. I was told early was bad and later is good. Basically the Mercedes i have has some lineage to a Detroit motors somehow so its ok. The early pure Mercedes motors were the bad ones. It seems like the break between good and bad happened somewhere between 03 to 05 but i don't remember exactly.
