Yes, we have done it before, in an emergency. Yes, it kinda worked. Did not yield as well as planted or drilled beans, but the lower investment would be a trade-off.
No, beans are not a sensitive to spacing as corn is. But they do require general consistency for best yields. With the cost of seed, fertilizer, and chems, most folks want to optimize their return. Leaving seeding that much to chance by broadcasting is a significant risk. It just does not work as well in a wide range of conditions as a planter that will provide consistent depth.
And our new planter was not even close to $400k. Not even half that. | |
