Check out Velocio.net

Basic PLC's with a graphical (flow chart) programming interface. You don't need to know a programming language, you don't need to know ladder logic (I don't). They have HMI's ( touchscreen buttons and readouts).

I think they are a step above the Arduino-level controls, xBee or whatever, cost a bit more. I have some on a planned grain system automation - need to finish converting an auger and an electrical box so all the sensors have a place to go.

I know a bit of VB, C, scraps of some other things and learned, through that process, that I much prefer visual programming interfaces for real-world engineering things. More intuitive. Loops and iterations and syntax are great for GIS, software, and financial programmers.
