I've basically done both types. The one where you drill out the shank is OK. Needhams, IMO, is the best. If you need new boots, or are close, Needhams is most definitely a no brainer. Here's why. With the needham, the hole in the shank doesn't matter. Instead of a bolt turning inside the shank bushing and the boot holes, it only wears on the boot holes as the bushings and bolt are tightened to the shank and the only wear happens between the bushings and the boot holes, this also keeps the boot more stable. The bushing is much larger than the bolt, which in theory, has much more surface area to wear. The kit is throw away if it does wear out. No bushing to get out of the shank and reinstall, or have problems with the bolt seizing in the bushing and the bushing then turning in the shank. The only drawback, and I did it this spring, was to drill out JD boots that weren't worn out yet. It worked, but was a pain. Phil is very helpful if you need. Phils boots are cheaper than JD and last as good, so if in the future you buy boots from him, just use his kit now as his boots are already drilled out for his bushing kit.
