I'm currently use a paid for calendar on my church web site called Thyme from Extrasoft. I've been using it for at least two years here. It is the most flexible calendar I could find at the time. Since then, Google Cal has become a very useful calendar and you can integrate that right into your web site. I don't know much about how you'd have members add events to it though. In the past couple months I've built the 3rd generation of my churches web site using Joomla. I would never do another site of this size with anything but a CMS system. Thyme has some tools to integrate the calendar into Joomla through modules and components. You need to be pretty computer savvy to use all this stuff and give up some time to learn it. The best book I've found for Joomla is Joomla A User's Guide by Barrie North. Joomla also has some add-ons to integrate Google Cal into it. I've done that here. You can see a Google integration into a non-CMS web site here .
The author of Thyme is extremely helpful if you run into problems. Give him access to your server and he'll go right in and fix things for you. A very trustworthy guy. As for people adding items from the site, I know Thyme makes it easy to do. I don't know enough about Google Cal though. If you'd like more info on Joomla, I have a step by step intstall guide I put together in Word for installing on a server using cPanel for it's user contol. Just email me. Lance O.
