Many colleges are starting to require that students have laptops and they are setting specs and preferred brands.  Some are even buying in bulk and reselling to incoming freshmen.  They are setting these machines up for their networks and loading them with the common needed software.  In most cases they can save you a little money also.  You may need wifi capabilities also.  It varies with the school.
