I see lots of kits ranging from $30-$1000 and I don't know how many of the parts or tools in those kits are worthwhile. Do I need everything there or is half of it never used?

 

That kit doesn't look too bad. (Note: I don't own that particular kit, but I use a fair amount of Deutsch connectors)
