Seaford, Delaware
Kent,

Your thread reminds me of a story that Neal Kinsey quotes in his "Hands On Agronomy" book. He became convinced on the use of soil conditioners versus deep tillage by an old friend of his named Jake Weeks. Jake sold chemicals for years. A company took over when he was in his 60s, and fired him. He couldn't get a comparable job anywhere until he found out about soil conditioners. He talked to some of the farmers he had known for years and asked them to try it. One of the farmers put the soil conditioner on a heavy black soil. He put on 4 ounces to the acre and marked it with a flag. Six weeks and two inches of rain later, he got the farmer to bring out his backhoe. They dug a trench right across the place where they had applied the product. From down in the trench it was not possible to see where the flag was.

One fellow got down into the trench with a knife. He started pulling the knife along the side of the trench about 36 inches down. When he got to where the flag was, he couldn't pull it past that point. The fellow on the backhoe was a Doubting Thomas so he jumped down into the trench. He started to pull across the treated soil with that same knife. When he got to where that flag was, he literally shook trying to pull knife through the untreated soil but he could not do it. In a month and a half, the effects were to be seen three and a half to four feet deep.

Moral of the story: Insanity is doing the same year after year and expecting different results!

Alan
