Devils Lake, ND | Soil that has been tilled is very prone to recompaction. You said it looks like you are losing root mass in the lower strata. There have been several studies that indicate this is common in no-till. Because of the better structure and moisture retention, you simply don't need as many roots...according to these studies.
It appears as though you are pointing yourself down the 'no-till tillage' path. Opinions will vary, but most posters on here will tell you that no-till means no tillage. Problems that invariably crop up can be better addressed by rotation and other practices that don't include tillage. You are lucky in your area, as (it appears) you have many rotation options. | |
