| Just got a new Gateway DX with Vista 64 bit a couple months ago. 6 gig ram, 600 gig harddrive, quad core processor. Pretty much the same uses as you except limited gaming. So far I love it. Plenty of expansion slots, etc, for later on, which is always important. Like you, my old computer was a 2001 version and the newer stuff coming out was just too much. Got the latest version of office, and, so far, I like it. My view on computers is to get absolutely as much processing power as you can afford, so it will last awhile, graphics cards, sound cards, etc, can always be added later, although this computer has a pretty decent graphics card already.
