Colby, Kansas | You make no mention of your location or cropping system, so I'm shooting in the dark here. Our systems are basically the same as mentioned by Tregellas we are either planting corn or sorghum back into our stubble the next spring. A spreader will give you a far more uniform pattern, especially at wider header widths which is important to maximize the benefits of surface residue while controlling the challenges (ex. overly thick residue negatively impacting seedling emergence in cool environments). In addition a uniform spread makes it easier to setup your planter have achieve good results. Keeping the residue in larger pieces is important for us as it takes longer to break down, this is especially important in our environment where its not uncommon to fail a crop, so you really need that residue to last until the next one.
