Stearns County, Minnesota | In the fall of 1957, I started at ISU, Ames, IA, I was classified by the draft board as 1A. To get a 2S classification ( student deferment), I was required to take 2 years of Army ROTC. The final 2 years were not required. By December of 1960 I joined the 34th Aviation Company at Boone, IA, which was part of the 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa National Guard, known as the Red Bull Division. By March 1961, I started Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. My final 4 months of active duty was done at Fort Riley, KS. When I got out of active duty I took a job in Mpls. I had to find another unit to complete my Reserve requirement. I joined the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron, which was part of the U.S. Air Force Reserves. In 1962, I was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After serving 30 days of active duty, we were released. I was a reciprocating engine mechanic. I attained the rank of Sergeant by the time my obligation was completed in December 1967. |
