Subject: RE: Veterans....sign in & sound off!

Stearns County, Minnesota

In the fall of 1957, I started at ISU, Ames, IA, I was classified by the draft board as 1A.  To get a 2S classification ( student deferment), I was required to take 2 years of  Army ROTC.  The final 2 years were not required.  By December of 1960 I joined the 34th Aviation Company at Boone, IA, which was part of the 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa National Guard, known as the Red Bull Division.  By March 1961, I started Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.  My final 4 months of active duty was done at Fort Riley, KS.  When I got out of active duty I took a job in Mpls.  I had to find another unit to complete my Reserve requirement.  I joined the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron, which was part of the U.S. Air Force Reserves.  In 1962, I was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  After serving 30 days of active duty, we were released.  I was a reciprocating engine mechanic.  I attained the rank of Sergeant by the time my obligation was completed in December 1967.
