southern MN | I'm the guy that plants turnips, clover, alfalfa with oats in spring, and harvest the oats, straw, and then let the cattle harvest any regrowth with cornstalks in fall.
We had a serious bout of winter earlier, was below zero, barely double digits for a while after thanksgiving.
And maybe a half foot of snow.
Cattle kicked around and dug up enough to keep themselves happy, the turnips were frozen solid tho.
Now we have the endless fog and temps got up to 50 yesterday and today. Got an hour of sun yesterday, but been a week since I'd seen it.
Blah. Wife and I run on sunshine, we are just both moping about.
Anyhow, I'm surprised the tops greened up like they did again, they were solid frozen. They are tough tho, they take a lot before they go down for the count. I suspect they would green up and die anyhow at this point.
But the cattle are happy, and me too, I first got them out there 2 days before thanksgiving, now they have a chance to find the ears of corn as well as harvest more turnips.
It is interesting how they shave off the big ones with their bottom teeth, keep grinding on them like we would slice cheese, down to ground level or below.
