Western-Central Lower Michigan | I inherited a cattle barn several years ago. Fought with the idea of what to do. I had a neighbor farmer who thought I should keep it. I invited him to inspect it close up, and he confirmed it was not a good candidate for keeping (no foundation on part of it). Decided it had to go, but HOW. I happened on a neighbor who would bring it to the ground, take the steel roofing and what ever else he wanted for no charge. I had another neighbor who burned wood in an outdoor woodstove, and took MOST of the wood. I had a friend that took a lot of the old hay/straw from, then I did pay a contractor to haul the cement/large rocks in the foundation and cleaned up the area. Its now just a memory. I still had a LOT of work even though I had others do most of the BIG jobs.
I'm glad it gone. Besides paying property taxes on a barn (here) there is paint and upkeep. It was just more than I wanted to do.
I also sold a 24x32 pole building on the property(to be moved or disassembled/with site clean up), it was out and away from where I live and not handy to get to. It was over 30 yrs old, and showing signs of rust. Cement floor was badly heaved and cracked. Same deal, sold it just to be rid of the head ache. If it were closer to my home, keeping it would have made more sense. |
