There is a really interesting book that tells several stories of how gold helped people escape death and in other instances start a new life. Wish I could remember the name of it off hand. It is a compilation of true stories. Different story for each chapter. One story I partially remember involves small gold coins sewn in the hems of a coat. Think it was in Poland. Since his family had gold to bribe guards with they were able to escape the Nazi's and immigrate to the US (local currency was worthless I think). Most of their neighbors of their community died. Another story is told by an immigration officer. Asian (can't remember the country) immigrants were being given political asylum in the US. They fled with only the clothes on their back and were allowed one suitcase. The ones that came filled with cash currency of the country they came from sadly had to be told their currency was worthless. Those who had gold had a nice nest egg to start their new life. Can't remember any more but there were several. Interesting read. Gold is still money when fiat currencies fail. John
