I've been using #1 used railroad ties for quite a few years now on my fence lines and they seem to work great.. As far as the high line poles keeping the manure away from the bottoms(next to ground surface) is a must.. Thought I had a great set up with a bull barn with guard rails until the high line poles started rotting off after about 8 - 10 years..
