For your age group your doing it right, the reality is we all will be bench warmers sometime in life. The local schools policy for basketball is 5&6 grade everybody plays close to equal time, major emphasis is fundementals and team work not winning at all cost, 7& 8 everybody plays but better players play more, 9th and older it's the best players.

Tell the 8 year olds parents the best way to learn is for them to spend 15 minutes a day playing catch, or him pitching, or batting. He will see more "action" in that 15 minutes than an entire game no matter what the position he's playing.
