E.Central MN | + 1. Cattle takes money, takes time, takes work, takes a high resilience to stress. Its not as easy as just deciding should I plant corn/beans/or wheat this season. Raising cattle takes a multi-year commitment. Part of the problem is that there were too many years where that multi-year commitment didn't pay off even though the supply/demand #'s indicated that it should have paid better. Now when foreign demand is increasing, a lot of cattle guys just aren't willing to invest in cattle raising like they might have 20 years ago. A lot of cattle guys are just getting up in the age where they don't want to put everything at risk any more. At the same time, high grain prices have shown the young guys that there are better places to put their energy. It should turn around as not everyone is going to be able to farm thousands of acres of grain. But the shortage of feeders will take time to overcome. | |
