I'm impressed Shadow - it's refreshing to hear that someone outside the industry has such a solid grasp on the particulars... especially considering there are many who ARE in the industry that either can't see the forest for the trees, or like playing ostrich.
The battle for land.... so very true.
If folks want to plow up every acre of pasture and dump all their livestock to go for what has been until recently - easier and more money doing crops, then have at er. But I don't want to hear people complaining / wondering why beef prices are so high - as if it is just some unexplained or surprise phenomena.
If no one wants to farm cows, then people shouldn't be surprised when the guys who still do get high prices. We'll keep doing the job no one wants to do anymore, and collect the prices that go with no one wanting to do the job.
