My granddad has told me the story of his dad buying a farm, probably back in the 1930s when it was so dry. The seller wanted GGdad to pay for the wheat crop, and it looked dead. About like those pictures I posted. Well GGdad said, "I think if you put a match to that wheat it would burn!" and the seller didn't believe him. So they struck a match and sure enough it started burning right down the row.
Anyway, they finished negotiating and GGdad went ahead and bought the farm with the "dead" wheat on it. Well, apparently they ended up getting some good rains and the wheat actually made a decent crop. I've been wishing for that same scenario the past 4 years, but doesn't look like it is going to happen. |
