southern MN | Last year, when Denny Hamlin spoke from the heart and said he thought the new cars were ok, but could use some improvements to make them put on a better race, he was penalized.
Now, I don't like Denny. He is a 'black hat' to me and I enjoy seeing him lose. So I am not some sort of fan of his. (Felt bad for the injury he suffered later in the year, don't want to see that on anyone!)
But I just couldn't believe he got a penalty for what he said. It was very calm, it was just a comment that as NASCAR we could improve the cars. He didnt blast anyone, he did't throw anyone under a bus.
I was just dumbfounded.
I did not try to boycott NASCAR after that. But looking back. That is the week I lost a lot of interest in NASCAR.
I realize all sports are entertainment, and they control their announcers, their players, their coaches and owners, and you need to toe the company line, not bad mouth the sport.
But Denny didnt say anything wrong. Or disrespectful.
If NASCAR is going to censure the drivers that much, that they can only be cheerleaders......
I found myself not listening to the NASCAR channel on Sirus radio. I didnt follow the shows that were on Speed the last half. All that talk is just controlled cheer leading, why waste my time.
I didnt make an effort to do so, looking back, it was just how it unfolded. I don't like to be told what I should hear, and with the penalty on Denny, they are telling me what I should listen to.
I really used to like the one race that was held every week. Or all three of the various levels. I wanted to know about the drivers, the track, the cars, the location. Was interesting each week.
Now it is chase, chase, Jr, chase, the top 4 teams, and a 5 minute recap of all the rest of the sport.....
Blah. Im not going to wade through all that fluff for the 5 minutes of interest.
