SWOH
The other thing to keep in mind, Brian, is that most insecticides put on at planting don't get along well with all herbicides. Whatever you decide to use just make sure you don't limit yourself on what you plan to use for weed control. We use Aztec and it doesn't limit us a whole lot on herbicide choice. If you have an Ohio State Weed Control Guide or look it up on the web it has a chart showing what you can't use with what and I'm sure there are plenty of other resources to help sort it out, too.

You need to know what you're going after, if you don't know that then you're about better off using the traits. It's like weed control...you can ask all kinds of questions on here about what herbicide is best for what but if you don't know what weeds you have it does no good. I don't think there is any one product that can replace everything that you would get in a VT3, but most likely you don't need everything you're getting in a VT3.

I'd try whatever you're going to do in 2015 on a few acres in 2014, just to see if it's going to work. For 2014, I'd look to see what kind of pressure you have and what you're up against.

For the herbicide issue replacing Roundup, we either use a full rate of Corvus and a pound of atrazine pre plant (and throw Roundup in with it if there's already grass up) or on our worked ground we just use 1.3 pt of s-metolachlor (Dual II Mag or usually generic) and a pound of simazine. Usually don't have to come back with a post on the Corvus but we always hit the Dual/simazine acres post with a full rate of Armezon or Impact and a pound of atrazine. It usually does well on small grasses but every now and then it fails. I've heard Capreno is decent on grass too but I've never used it so I can't say.

If it were me, I'd read up on insecticides as much as possible (other than NAT and what everybody else is doing) and get a pretty good understanding about what is available and what not to do for sure and then figure out if it's going to work for you to go that way instead of the VT3's. NAT is a good resource, but I don't like to make decisions based solely on what everybody else is doing.
