Subject: RE: How old are pesticides?

western NY
A neighbor of ours who has since passed said his father was the first in Monroe County NY to spray potatows, this was in the 1910's. They used lime and sulfer mixed with blue vetteral, which I think is copper sulfate. I was told they let it soak in barrels of water and bailed it into the sprayer. The sprayer was horse drawn and ground driven. This was suposed to controle blight. They also used Paris Green for bugs which I think is an arsinic.

Another neighbor who had a large farm and seed house promoted using dust for potatows and cabbage in the 1920's and even made and sold dust. This was suposed to be faster since you didn't have to haul water. Remember this was back in the days before a lot of farms had running water and most of the power came from horses.
