Sulfur powder was actually used by the Sumerians 4,500 years ago and the Chinese around 1,000 BC. The Chinese also invented arsenic-based pesticides. It made its way in Europe in the 1600s, together with some nasties like lead and mercury. Nicotine was used as an insecticide in Europe in the 1700s. That century also saw some pesticides for fruit trees, like spraying a tea of rue to fight cantharid flies, or a mix of vinegar, cow dung and urine to fight canker. | |
