Yes, we need more info. "86 was the time the switch was made from corbs to fuel injection. The Ford carbs of that era had enough complication that it might be difficult for a shop to diagnose. Ford also had a distributor module in that era that was prone to failure. It usually quit completely. Maybe your friend has one that goes partly bad when the engine warms up.
