As long as you keep transferring it to media that can be read by current technology and keep software or an old machine around that can still read it or convert it to a new format that works with current technology.  Digital pictures have not been around long enough to predict their fate but I have hundreds of programs and files above our office that are either on media I can no longer read, media that has lost its memory, or programs that no longer run on current machines. "Forever" in technology seems to be about 10 to 20 years in human terms. Something tells me that all these permanent cd's will be unreadable by anything in another 10 or 20 years so better figure on transferring those images to something newer every ten years or so.
