What logically will rye seed do, that was not germinated last fall?

Winter wheat, according to SDSU, only needs to take up enough moisture to swell the seed (but doesn't have to germinate) for vernalization to occur with cold temps.  You've got rye not wheat, and I'm definately not smart enough to say if the same applies.  My guess is it will produce seed if not burnt down.
