North Central Kansas | This is difficult for us smaller/part time farmers who would like to expand and farm full time. I have older small equipment so what am I to do, go buy big newer machinery and go broke so I look like I can rent more ground?? Then there is the problem of perception. If you do something else along with your farm to make a living then people label you as a guy who does, (Fill in whatever) and they think that must be what you want to do. Sometimes this fight seems impossible. The opportunity to farm has become a birthright like royalty.
I too struggle with the question of how persistent to be with a prospective landlord. Had one guy tell me a story of trying to rent land and the landlord told him if you would have come to see me just one more time, I would have rented it to you. On the other hand, if you push someone too hard, you can irritate them. | |
