Subject: and banding gets the BAD NAME!....

The Shell Knob Basin (Southwest Missouri)
Direct Injected - 3/21/2013 15:02

Do you know what the term staggy means? Thats what I have seen from calves that aren't cut or banded until they get that big. The look and sell like a bull.

yes, I definitely know what "staggy" means!!... Its when a bunch of 14 month old bulls, that even though theyre only weighing 650, are still 14 months old, aren't castrated until they already begin to look like bulls and then will still look like bulls when they sell as 16 month old 750 lbs steers........ thats staggy!.... You see it ALL THE TIME with these true fescue calves coming out of SoMo and NorthArk!!..... on the flip side, when bull calves are weighing 670 at 8 months of age, and still look like calves and have testicles that are half the size of those 14 month old calves weighing the same amount, its HARD HARD to find one that will look "staggy" when hes being sold as a 10 month old 750 lbs steer!......................... I mean Hard!.... Thats what alot of people in the industry dont understand about these true fescue calves... alot of times the weaned 5 weights will be yearlings!... Period... pretty easy to get some year and a half old bulls that havent been castrated yet to look like "bulls".... even if they only weigh 650..... big difference between that and true managed delayed castration with good calves using bands.... very very big difference.... With that being said, Direct injection, im still not trying to argue with you!!.... your 100% right!... alot of bulls around here that dont get castrated until late have a "staggy" look, and alot of people in the fescue belt are bad at castrating with bands and should be using a knife so they know they got them!..... But i just hate that those examples are what is used to give properly managed delayed castration with a band a BAD NAME..... I can definitely now see why you would give more money in the future for 3 weights that were advertised as being cut with a knife!.... I admittedly probably would too coming out of some of the sales i mentioned earlier!!........ No hard feelings??
