Buffalo IL | Yes, fescue will fill in over time. Most generally there is seed bank in the soil. The problem is the weeds and thistles will start first. Resting the pasture and getting fescue growing actively will control the weeds over time. A dose of 24d may be necessary if really bad for weeds. Those weeds are mother natures cure for covering the ground. I've had good luck frost seeding clover, but it is getting late for that. Sowing the clover and dragging the pasture is the best option now. If you are going to put nitrogen on -it is probably a wasted effort to seed the clover unless it is low rate. Heavily trashed pasture may benefit from seeding a grass mix. I would like to try some Chicory on some overgrazed pasture I have to see if it will grow. Here are some pictures if I've done it right of a pasture that use to grow darn good thistles and where cows are calving now and one where heifers are calving.
