Sandy Hook, MB | Hello DVFarms
Vet does mine. A few years back now I used a friend of a friend of a friend (don't want to mention any names, don't want to get anybody in trouble, around here you can check your own cattle but you're not allowed to check others for hire) to check mine for 3 years. He was way cheaper than the vet. One year I had just over 50 cows on one farm with 1 bull. This just worked out that way & I expected to have a few late ones or opens. Out of that herd I had 23 open cows. I figured that it must of been the bulls fault & not the cows, so instead of culling all the opens I figured I give them another chance instead of buying or raising replacements. I got 6 calves out of those 23 open cows. I never used that guy again. I figure that 1 screw up & culling 1 bred that's called open will more than pay for the vet's fee. I feed my cull cows & sell them about 1 month before the breds start calving & so far it looks like the vet hasn't made any mistakes.
