Ortho is a very pure product. However, that doesn't necessarily translate to lower salt. It does have less impurities than poly phos, but that doesn't in itself give it less salt.

Less salt has more to do with the nitrogen content and potash source. For instance a typical Ortho 3-18-18 has a very low salt index. A typical Ortho 9-18-9 has a somewhat higher salt index than the 3-18-18. 10-34-0 (Ortho/Poly) has an even higher salt content. So that proves the lower salt values of the Ortho, right? Sorry, a good 6-24-6 (Ortho/poly) has a lower salt content than does 9-18-9. The good 6-24-6 is also nearly as low in salt content as is the 3-18-18. Placed on the seed the "Good" 6-24-6" will usually outperform the 3-18-18, or the 9-18-9. Not always, but usually if the appropriate recommendation has been made.

Absolute purity (Ortho) does not translate to performance. Proper formulation, does!
