Howard,

I guessing that your vegetable crops include some brassicas but if NOT you should definitely try adding some brassica cover crops in your cropping systems.

If your vegetable crops include quite a few brassicas, you should be judicious about adding more brassicas but radishes, rapeseed, canola, turnips, forage kale and collards and various hybrid brassicas developed for forage purposes all grow fast, decompose quickly reducing problems with residue and tolerate some frost.

There seems to be real benefit from combining cover crop species but much of the value of mixtures can probably be achieved with 3-4 species as opposed to the 10+ species cocktails that are getting lots of press.

For some good ideas on species to combine, I recommend that you take a look at the mixtures listed at the following link:
http://www.greencoverseed.com/smartmix.htm and then try playing with the smartmix calculator to develop some blends that seem worth a try.
