| As a young fella working for the neighbor on Saturdays I was standing next to the manure spreader scraping the insides with a shingle to clean it out on a winter day. The drive shaft grabbed my pants and quickly rolled them up to my waist. I was out behind the buildings and yelling my head off, while pinned to the side of the spreader. Fortunately it was just ideling. I didn't know the man I was working for could run that fast as he found me and cut me out with a pocket knife. Obviously I survived, and a few weeks later he showed me an article in a newspaper of a body wrapped around a pto shaft. It was nothing more than a bloodsoaked pair of coveralls. I almost never step over a running pto shaft and the few times I have am very careful to clear it by wide margin. I have never forgotten that lesson. | |
