There are a few operations in this area who are getting up to 160 bushels (spring) barley per acre, so maybe it could be competitive with corn?
As for the straw, I feed barley straw as up to 1/3 of the ration. It is all we use as a nurse crop, yes it does often go down, and the underseeded hay grows through it, but it is recoverable, and the straw makes very good feed then.
But here, is a long way and a lot of heat units from Illinois.
