One thing to add if you do use it as a nurse crop fertilize very little because this makes it taller and more prone to lodging. Sometimes we don't fertilize at all and have good success. And select a variety with good lodging resistance and the earliest maturity possible. We have been doing it successfully like this for 25t years.
