Subject: Re: Barley questions

Saltcoats, Saskatchewan
In Saskatchewan, we grow lots of barley, feed and malt, all spring types. The one thing I recommend is looking for a smooth awned variety if feeding straw. Rough awns can irritate mouths, unless silaged/green feed cut just after heading. Spring types doesn't take drought or heat well, unless you have better varieties. All varieties are OP'ed. As a nurse crop, it can be aggressive and chokes out forage seedlings. Most of the time with forage establishments from my forage seed customers, barley as a cover crop is a problem.
