Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | He was in the Army Corp of Engineers running a dozer. Back behind the lines some but always talked about hearing the bombs and etc from the Battle of the Bulge. They fixed roads and bridges behind the lines. Yes, my Dad was in his 30's when he was drafted and served. He also served in Canada for a winter near Great Slave Lake. He was on a ship coming back from Europe when they dropped the bombs on Japan. He said had they not done that he was on his way to the Pacific.
I had an uncle that talked about freeing the Auschwitz prison. He always told about the Captain or General telling him and a few others they could have the priviledge of opening the gates. He said later that the reason they were given that "honor" was the higher up officers thought that the gates might be booby trapped. |
