Martinsville, Ohio | Thanks, I liked that story. I think the next one will be national and maybe worldwide and will make the 80's look like child's play. There is several on here loaded for bear literally in case that happens. Me, I am not smart enough or energetic enough to prepare for all of that. God always got me through and He will again.
I saw one old farmer I knew back then just died. He had a beautiful farm all paid for and his son put him in a trailer. He supported his boy but he farmed in the 70's with debt like the country is doing, like there is no tomorrow. The lein holder sold everything last nut and bolt to recapture some of his money and the dad hid enough away for a double wide on a friend's lot. I know many stories like that.
His brother was luckier, his son tried that but never got quite deep enough in to lose the whole place. Last time I saw him he was working at TSC and he is nearly my age.
I went to so many auctions where you could buy nice equipment for 10 cents on the dollar. I never bought much because I am tight. I was raised by depression generation parents who didn't borrow a dime unless they just had to. They didn't have all that much but they made a living and all 3 of us kids graduated from college and did OK for ourselves.
But I really wanted to farm, I didn't want to teach. I got addicted to the monthly paycheck and then had kids and once you have 10 years in public education, it is hard to go elsewhere unless you get kicked out. I know many that did that, too.
I know now I could have made it full time farming with the right partner but not with the one I had. I had to hold the checkbook or it would all be gone. Now I have the right one and getting too old to farm and no one you hire does it exactly like you would. You live to learn with that.
This society so spoiled now, Lord knows what will happen. Mace asked a good question I don't think anyone can predict but it is interesting discussing the past and future possible scenario's.
