I can't tell you how far back it goes (I was born in 1951) but kids around Hagerstown Indiana all had a "Slinky Like Toy" as far back as I can remember in my youth.
They were the spiral shavings from the Perfect Circle company when the piston rings were made. People just brought the cast off shavings home and kids walked them down the stairs.
Sometimes accidents can be a good thing.
